Finishing the room with details The color we chose for the walls was actually a custom color, chosen to match the built ins that our custom builder created for us. Our millwork squares are roughly 21″x 22″ squares - we measured it so they would fit perfectly across the length of the wall. The millwork really gives the space so much personality and makes it feel finished. We hired a local wood worker, showed him some design ideas ( like this one), and he went to work. Philip had the idea to do wall paneling on the walls of our home theater room, and I’m so thrilled we did it. I discovered a “modular couch” somewhere along the way - it’s a kind of sectional that you can re-arrange in various ways.Ī modular couch is the perfect kind of couch for this space because we can turn it into a giant couch bed when it’s family movie night. But since our space is pretty small, a couch was the best option. Most home theaters have big reclining chairs, or layers of couches. But the room is actually fairly narrow, and the cut out in the one corner made it tricky to fit a big couch vertically across the room. Why we decided on a TV versus a projectorĪt first we planned to do a projector in this room and face the couch toward the far wall. Here was our criteria for the home theater room: We went through a lot of design ideas before landing on the layout and design of this room. So we were super excited to turn this into a really cozy space. But we’re total movie lovers, and have family movie night almost every weekend. When we bought our new house, and I mentioned that it had a home theater room included in the floor plans, many people recommended turning into into a home gym or a playroom.
